Initially, he started playing roles in the theatres. Later, Tom Halter, a theatre director suggested Vijay’s name for a play called “Three Short Plays”. Then, he also performed in Hindi theatre plays. He also worked as a fashion model and used to receive Rs 500 for his modeling assignments.

He made his debut in the short film “Shor” which was released in the year 2008 and also won the Best Short Film at the MIACC festival in New York. Vijay played the character of Jhunku (Shubodh Roy) in the film Chittagong which was released in 2012. He has also been featured in magazines like Tabloid and Reverie.

His acting skills were recognized after the release of the film “Pink” in 2016. He also acted in various Hindi films such as Manto (2018), Gully Boy (2019) and Bamfaad (2020). Varma was also nominated for the Best Actor in the Drama Series “Dahaad” and Best Actor award in the Netflix Original film “Darlings”. Moreover, he won the 26th Screen Awards for Best Supporting Actor for the film Gully Boy.

Varma was raised in a middle-class Marwari Hindu family. His father, Surya Prakash Varma owns a handcrafted business. His mother, Suchitra was a homemaker. He has an older brother named Manoj Varma and also an older sister named Shobha Varma. He calls his parents “The Pillars Of Strength” as they have been very motivating for Vijay.
